' And on the 8th day, God looked down on his planned paradise and said, "I need a caretaker".
So God Made a Farmer. ' - Paul Harvey
My Taid (grandfather), left his family farm in Wales to settle in central New York in the spring of 1912. His family had purchased him a 3rd class ticket aboard the Titanic, However, wanting to get his crops in early to ensure a fall harvest, he cashed in his ticket and sailed in March instead. The piece of paradise he left behind was called Rhos Ddu (pronounced ross day), meaning black meadow. The farm is still in operation today.
My father learned his work ethic and love for the land and animals on the farm that my Taid created here. Growing up during the depression, farming was considerable different from what it is now. What we would consider hardships, weren't for them. Walking barefoot to school and hitching up the team to take cans of milk to town were a way of life and my father often reflected on his childhood fondly.
I inevitably inherited a love for growing food and flowers and raising animals. There is something powerful and remarkable to be found in the bite of a sweet, juicy tomato, in the delicate beauty of a flower or in the pure innocence of a newly hatched chick. That feeling is not just pride, but a reverence for nature and the overwhelming awe that God has entrusted me as one of his caretakers.
It is our mission, to share the love of what nature has to offer - whether it be food on your plate, the centerpiece on your table, decorations on your front porch or feathered friends in your backyard.
